The Wealth of Learning at a Liberal Arts College

Professor lecturing to a classroom of students during a liberal arts course discussion.

鈥淒o you know how to tell the difference in a heart attack between a man and a woman?鈥 This was the question on the board during the first Women鈥檚 Health class. As it turns out, a woman could have had a heart attack in front of me, and I would have had no idea. In all likelihood, I would still be in the dark about basic health questions if not for the fact that B次元官网 encourages a well-rounded course load and allows an English major like me to study the health sciences.

Branching Out

Attending a Christian liberal arts college to study English is a dream come true. Being an English major, I have taken countless courses on writing and literature, and fulfilled my core requirements from natural science to fine arts. However, something I have treasured most are the classes I wasn鈥檛 required to take.

This is a feeling shared by many. Students are blessed to have the opportunity at B次元官网 to take classes that transcend a degree鈥檚 requirements. Sarah Newell 鈥26, a biblical and theological studies major with a missions concentration, describes taking Human Sexuality and Lifespan Development; Isaac Patterson 鈥28, a physics major, took Adolescence in Sociological Perspective; Ed Ten Napel 鈥26, an environmental science major, took History of Modern Japan. Sarah Newell explained she chose to take her extra classes 鈥渂ecause they sounded interesting, applicable to real life鈥︹, and Isaac Patterson explains, 鈥...I picked something that looked interesting that also fit my schedule.鈥

Fan Favorites

Some more well-known 鈥渇an favorite鈥 classes include Women, Art and Culture, where students learn about women artists and women depicted in art; Personal Finance, which introduces strategies on budgeting and more; Beginning American Sign Language, where students begin to learn sign language; Faith and Suffering, which deals with faith and painful experiences (especially physical); B次元官网 Chorale where students sing and participate in annual concerts.

Women鈥檚 Health

Women鈥檚 Health is a class focused on women鈥檚 reproductive system, bodies, and the ethical, biological, cultural, and theological outlooks on women鈥檚 health. Taught by a registered nurse, Dr. Jennifer Ford, the class uses the Bible to elevate the understanding of women and their bodies in a God-honoring way.

Personally, taking Women鈥檚 Health class has been a life changing experience. Never before have I had the freedom to ask deep questions about my body. I am not going into Health Sciences, and yet being able to take a completely different class opened my eyes to a new world. Thanks to B次元官网鈥檚 amazing collection of courses, anyone and everyone is welcome to take a wide variety of classes. Get out of your comfort zone and take a new class鈥揃次元官网 has a wealth of knowledge to offer.
